Perre, Pirin is an ancient city located in the Örenli (Pirin) neighborhood, 5 km away from the city center of the central district of Adıyaman province.

Perre Ancient City, one of the five largest cities of the Kingdom of Commagene, known as Me’arath, Gaza Pörön in old sources, Pirin and Perin in Mesopotamia, was used in the past as it was on the road route connecting Melitene (Malatya) to the capital Samosata (Samsat). It had geopolitical importance.

Perre, known as Hierapolis (Holy City), was founded in AD. It participated in the Biblical council held in Nicaea (Iznik) in 325 as a city of the Persidas province under the administration of Bishop Ioannes Perdos. MS. The fact that Andreas of Samosata (Samsat) mentioned some important bishops in Perre in his letter to Alexander in 433 shows that the city was also an important city in terms of religion. All these show that the Ancient City of Perre was a city of both religious and geopolitical importance in the Ancient Period.

Museum

5.0/ 5

I thought it was a small area, but it is a very impressive open-air museum. There are mostly rock tombs inside. You need to spend 2 hours to fully explore it, museum card is valid. You can also watch the animation telling the history of the kingdom at the entrance. It is very close to Adıyaman center, if you do not have a car, bus number 1 brings you directly to the museum entrance.

A very large settlement

5.0/ 5

We didn’t realize until we left that it was a very large settlement. I recommend you spend at least 1.2 hours to look at the entire excavation area. Areas 13 and 14 were the king’s tombs, there is no entrance to them, they are covered and it is a protected place in the forward part.
