Checkout Walking Mansion – Yalova Watch Video

Square-shaped wooden mansion belonging to Atatürk, with a columned terrace overlooking the Marmara Sea.

Atatürk sets off from Istanbul to Bursa on 21 August 1929. While Ertuğrul was passing by the coast of Yalova on his yacht, he was very impressed by the great plane tree he saw on the beach. Ataturk, who went to the shore by boat and sat under the shade of the tree, asked for a small house to be built for him next to the plane tree. This wooden two-storey house was built in 22 days and completed on September 12, 1929.

Exactly one year later, in the summer of 1930, Atatürk came to his mansion in Millet Çiftliği. He encounters a gardener trying to cut the branches of the grand plane tree right next to the mansion. Learning that the branches of the tree are leaning on the roof and wall of the building, Ataturk gives his famous order: “The branch will not be cut, the mansion will be moved!” ”

Upon this order, the work started on August 8, 1930 by teams of architects and engineers from the Istanbul Technical Works Roads and Bridges Branch, and the surroundings of the mansion were excavated to the foundation level and tram rails were placed under the foundation.   First of all, the terrace part of the mansion is shifted in one day, and in the remaining two days, the process of moving the main building on rails is completed and the building is 4.80 m high. It is shifted to the east. In this way, the mansion is saved from being demolished and the tree branch is saved from being cut. After this event, which was a first in environmental awareness, the name of the building became “Walking Mansion”. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk hosted important Turkish and foreign statesmen of the period here and took important decisions that would shape Turkey’s political and social history in this mansion. Atatürk came to the mansion intermittently between 1930 and 1937.

The mansion was counted among the Cultural and Natural Assets to be protected by the decision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Monuments dated 12.07.1980 and numbered 12238 and was registered. As a result of the report prepared in 2015 about the registered Plane Tree, which caused the construction of the mansion, the tree of the Eastern Plane (Plantanus Orientalis) species was reported to be 390 years old and healthy.
The mansion, which was restored in 2006 and opened to the public, is the most popular place in Yalova today. Approximately 50 thousand people visit the mansion annually.

Entrances are held every 20 minutes and the fee is only 5 TL (3 TL for students). I would also like to thank the museum management for its maintenance and cleanliness. In addition, what distinguishes it from many museums is that you can reach it by walking along the beach.

Today, as we live this joy, pride and hope together in this city that Gazi Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK called "My City", in our Yalova, we believe and know that as long as we live and keep this joy, pride and hope alive together, we will achieve what we want to achieve. , wherever we want to be, all together.

Salman said that they took an x-ray of the plane tree, which is the most important part of the Walking Mansion. Salman said, "We had an x-ray of the Plane Tree in the garden of the Walking Mansion taken by a state-approved organization. It turned out that the tree was 390 years old.

Instead of cutting down the plane tree, Atatürk wanted the building to be moved a little further on the tram rails. Thereupon, the mansion was shifted approximately 5 meters from its foundation.

Visiting hours to the Walking Mansion, which will be open six days a week, will be between 09:00 - 17:00 on weekdays and 09:30 - 17:00 on weekends.

The construction of the mansion started on 21 August 1929 and was completed 22 days later on 12 September.

With its view, its tree that has become a historical symbol, and its special story, the walking mansion is truly a place worth visiting. Unfortunately, we could not see the inside of the mansion because we went at a very busy time and during the holiday, but it was enjoyable to be there and see the items, even from the outside. After a quiet coastal walk, you can greet the mansion and have something to eat and drink at the cafe next to it, accompanied by a sea view.

I had been passing around it all the time before I had the chance to go there yet, but now I had the opportunity to go. It was very nice. There are picnic areas for families on the road leading to the Ataturk Mansion, one side was the sea and the other was a wooded area. Atatürk Mansion was also very beautiful. I recommend places to go and see for those who want to learn its history well. Also, it was the most famous Yalova milkshake, I bought it and ate it, it was also very nice.

Unfortunately, the cafeteria is crowded on weekends in the spring and the staff is difficult to keep up with it, but other than that, it is right next to the seaside, surrounded by nature, with a walking and cycling path and a picnic area (next to the sea). It has a really pleasant atmosphere. It is recommended.
