The clock tower suits Amasya, one of the most beautiful cities of the region, very well. The lighting of the mansions and historical areas on the banks of Yeşilırmak is also wonderful.
Amasya Clock Tower is a clock tower located in the central district of Amasya. The tower, which was built by Amasya Governor Ziya Pasha in 1865, was damaged by a fire in the same year. The structure, which was severely damaged by the earthquake in 1938, was demolished in February 1940 by Amasya Governor Talat Öncel for the construction of a new bridge. It was rebuilt in 2002, remaining faithful to the original structure.
Clock towers have a different place in Anatolian Turkish Architecture in terms of their functions and architecture. Their main function is to show the time, but they also served various functions such as fire and watchtowers. It also caused official institutions to work with sundials, as in the West, instead of adhan time.
Amasya Clock Tower is located on the west side of the Government (Helkıs) Bridge in Amasya City Center. The work was commissioned in 1865 by the Governor of Amasya, Poet Ziya Pasha. The tower, which was exposed to a fire right after its first construction, experienced its real misfortune in February 1940 and was removed by the Governor of the time, Talat ÖNCEL, on the grounds that the adjacent wooden Helkıs Bridge was demolished and rebuilt in reinforced concrete, hindering the construction of the bridge, and with the promise of building a more modern clock tower in its place. . The existing clock tower was rebuilt in accordance with its original state by the Governor of Amasya, Hüseyin POROY, on 18 June 2002. The building material is smooth cut stone, brick and wood.
The tower essentially looks like a minaret. The pedestal has a square plan, cylindrical body and smooth cut stone material. There is a semicircular arched window opening on the east facade, and a semicircular arched door and two window openings on the north facade. The body rises as a cylindrical mass on a shoe staggered with rows of sawtooth-shaped bricks that narrow slightly in four directions and is made entirely of brick material.
It was built by Ziya Pasha in 1865 on the Nergis Bridge.
The Clock Tower, located in Konak Square and the symbol of Izmir, was built by the Ottoman Sultan Sultan II. In 1901, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Abdulhamid's accession to the throne; It was built by a commission consisting of Izmir Governor Kıbrıslı Kamil Pasha, Naval Governor Said Pasha and Mayor Eşref Pasha.
Built on an octagonal and four-step cross-shaped marble platform on an 81 square meter base, the Clock Tower is 25 meters high and four floors. On the narrow sides of the octagonal platform, there are fountains sitting on four small columns.
For this reason, large clock towers began to be built between 1300 and 1500. The clock tower of the Strasbourg Cathedral, built in England in 1386, is the first clock tower built in the world.
