The history of Kadıköy dates back to very old times. The date of its establishment is accepted as 675 BC. It is known that around 1000 BC, a trade colony known as Harhadon was established by the Phoenicians in Fikirtepe. A second settlement called Halkedon (Copper Country) was established between Moda Burnu and Yoğurtçu, opposite the first settlement in Fikirtepe. Halkedon (Calkedon) became famous for the Temple of Apollo during this period. Haydarpaşa Meadow was used by the Halkedonians for horse races. The Byzantines, who settled in Sarayburnu in 658 BC and laid the foundation of the Byzantine city, were amazed by the beauty of the region and, while this beautiful place was still there, they described the people who settled on the opposite side (in Kadıköy) as blind and called Kadıköy the “Land of the Blind”. For this reason, it has also been called by this name in various sources.

After the conquest of Istanbul, Fatih Sultan Mehmet gave Halkedon to the first Istanbul Judge, Celalzade Hızır Bey, who was the grandson of the daughter of the famous Nasreddin Hodja. It is said that the name of the settlement was changed to Kadıköy in response to this. The 18th century was a period when the Kadıköy area gained importance as a recreational area, especially during the Tulip Era. Haydarpaşa, Yoğurtçu, Moda and Kuşdili meadows and Uzun Çayır were popular walking areas. In the 18th century, it is seen that Armenians also started to settle in Kadıköy, where Turks and Greeks had lived until then.

It can be said that on the eve of the Republic, Kadıköy was one of the most developed districts of Istanbul.

Kadıköy, which was affiliated with Üsküdar for a long time, became a district on September 1, 1930. On that date, Kadıköy had two towns: Kızıltoprak and Erenköy.

During the period between 1938 and 1949, which was the third period of urban development operations in Istanbul initiated by the Governor and Mayor Dr. Lütfi Kırdar, projects were also carried out in Kadıköy. The construction of a bridge on the section of the Kadıköy-Üsküdar road that meets the railway in Haydapaşa, the asphalting of Bağdat Street up to Kartal, and the construction of the Kadıköy Community Center were the most important urban development operations in Kadıköy during this period.
