The nine-kilometer-long Bagdat Street is one of the most popular shopping and walking areas in Istanbul. It passes through Kızıltoprak, Feneryolu, Selamiçeşme, Çiftehavuzlar, Göztepe, Caddebostan, Erenköy, Şaşkınbakkal, Suadiye and Çatalçeşme and extends to Bostancı.

You can come to this street, which you can think of as a modern and stylish version of İstiklal Street, to shop from well-known brands, eat at nice restaurants and watch the surroundings. The fact that Bagdat Street is parallel to the sea offers those walking here a different route where they can walk through parks with sea views. Although it follows a different route from today’s Bagdat Street, it is known that there was a road extending from Üsküdar to Anatolia even during the Byzantine period. When Sultan Murad IV conquered Bagdat in 1638, he changed the name of the road to celebrate this event (the Bagdat Kiosk in Topkapı Palace also takes its name from this event – p. 000). The road was adorned with fountains for thirsty travelers by Murad IV and his successors; some of the fountains have survived to this day, while others are remembered only by the names they gave to neighborhoods such as Çatalçeşme, Selamiçeşme and Söğütlüçeşme. Çatalçeşme, which provided water to the camel caravans passing by, was built with three spouts. Most of the fountains were part of the prayer rooms.

The neighborhoods around Bağdat Street became popular settlement areas in the 19th century and magnificent mansions were built. It is possible to see the ones that have survived to this day, especially around Caddebostan. Many wooden summer mansions built on the seashore have unfortunately been left behind among the concrete piles. Zühtü Paşa Mosque, one of the important works that left its mark on the history of this region, was built in 1885 by Ahmed Zühtü Paşa, Minister of Education of Abdülhamid II. It attracts attention with its short, thick and single-balcony minaret. Zühtü Pasha and his family lie in a surrounded grave in the courtyard of the mosque in Kızıltoprak. Another important structure in the area, the Galip Pasha Mosque, was built in 1899 in the Eclectic style by Galip Pasha, one of Sultan Abdülhamid’s governors.

The most popular and most loved meeting points on the Anatolian Side are undoubtedly Bağdat Street. This is a region where new venues are constantly opening and always changing and transforming. In fact, it is becoming a gastronomy paradise day by day. It is possible to find a venue to suit every taste and mood on Bağdat Street. In fact, there are many addresses waiting to be discovered here. Bağdat Street has a very wide range of venues. There are many options here, ranging from breakfast venues to Italian restaurants, from burgers to cocktail bars.

Today, those driving around and showing off on Bağdat Street, especially between Caddebostan and Suadiye, contribute significantly to traffic congestion. On days when the Fenerbahçe football team wins a match, the street takes on a carnival atmosphere. If you walk along the parallel streets of the street and the coast, you will come across pleasant parks. Özgürlük Park in Selamiçeşme is one of the most popular parks for the locals. The open-air theater inside hosts a festival at the beginning of August. Dalyan Park on the seaside will add an elegant view to your walking route. The rose garden in Göztepe Park will be proof of the beauty that nature can offer to people. The modern synagogue on Taş Mektep Street in Göztepe also reminds us that there was a large Jewish community in the region.

Alexandre Vallaury designed the Cemil Topuzlu Mansion in 1900, mixing classical Turkish architecture with Art Nouveau. The magnificent mansion on Operator Cemil Topuzlu Street was built for the mayor of the time. It was on the seaside before the coastal road widening works carried out in the 1980s.

The museum's owner, Sunay Akın, has collected over 5,000 toys on display for many years; the oldest of the toys is a French-made violin from 1817. In the section, which is set up like a toy shop, you will find examples of toys of the style once made in Eyüp.

Where in the world do you see a street lamp in the shape of a giraffe? As for the giraffes, they are copies of the statue in the garden of the house of the Minister of Education, Mehmed Münif Tahir Pasha (1830-1910), which was located in Erenköy and was called the “Giraffli Köşk”. Tahir Pasha was no ordinary minister. Throughout his life, he tried to emphasize the importance of children and therefore education in the construction of the future. He had various studies done on this subject. Unfortunately, his mansion has received its share of “modern!” construction.

The magnificent Ragıp Pasha Mansion in Caddebostan was designed by August Jasmund, who also built the Sirkeci Train Station in 1906. The building next to the Caddebostan Migros was right on the sea before the road was built. Ragıp Pasha (1857-1920), who was the Chamberlain of Sultan Abdulhamid II, was impressed by the imperial lands spreading over three continents and had the African, Anatolian and Rumelian inns built in Beyoğlu.

The most popular part of Bağdat Street, between Caddebostan and Suadiye; the Vakko store, located in a white, wooden mansion in a neighborhood that can be considered a paradise for those who like world brands, immediately draws attention. All the brands you can think of - Laura Ashley, Mark's & Spencer, Louis Vuitton, Alfa Romeo, Mavi Jeans, Yves Rocher, Burberry and more -, numerous bank branches and cafes lined up side by side - Starbucks, Gloria Jean's, Kahve Dünyası, Caffe Nero - do their best to make shoppers happy. If İstiklal Street is too crowded and ordinary for you, we recommend you come here for shopping.

Many minibuses and buses departing from Kadıköy come to this area. The one-way system used in traffic, that is, coming from Kadıköy to Bostancı via Sahilyolu and returning from Bostancı to Kadıköy via Bağdat Street, sometimes creates problems. In order to go from Kadıköy to Bağdat Street, you have to go along the coast and turn onto one of the streets on the left or wait until the bus completes the circle. You can also reach most of the surrounding neighborhoods by suburban trains departing from Haydarpaşa, but the trains do not satisfy those looking for modernity and cleanliness. You can also use the sea buses departing from Kabataş to get to Kadıköy and Bostancı.
