Mor Peter and Mor Paulus Church is in Adıyaman Central Mara District. The church, which is estimated to have been built in the 4th or 5th century, was repaired in 1888 and 1905, according to the Syriac inscriptions on the entrance door and inside.
The church, which extends in an east-west direction, has a three-naved basilical plan. The wooden altar in the apse was made by Assyrian masters from Urfa in 1890 and was recently repaired. The upper floor of the narthex in the west opens to the interior. St. The church, also known as Paul’s Church, is used by the Assyrian Community today.
Assyrians have an important place in the history of Adıyaman. The old name of Adıyaman is Hesno d’Mansur in Syriac. It obviously points to the deep-rooted presence of Assyrians in this region. Although they are rich in terms of both population and artifacts in the center of Adıyaman, in terms of the structure they have survived to the present day; Mor Peter and Mor Paul, located in the Mara District, is the Assyrian Ancient Church and Assyrian Ancient Cemetery.
