Giresun Museum is located in Zeytinlik District, formerly known as Gogora District. The building is mentioned as St. Nicholas Church in old sources.  The church is located in a courtyard and has a rectangular plan in the east-west direction. Although the main entrance of the church is from the west, there are secondary entrances from the north and south. Both sides of the main door are decorated with a relief column profile and the front part is decorated with a twisted column.  The nave of the church, which has a rimmed dome with twelve windows on it (the name given to the holiest place in a temple where the cult statue is preserved), is divided into three naves (each section of the building separated by columns or piers) with two rows of columns. The middle nave is wider than the side naves, and at the end of each nave there is an apse (a curved wall located behind the choir in churches, covered with a vault or dome). The triple apse has a circular plan on the inside and a pentagonal plan on the outside. The middle apse is wider and higher than the side apses. The naves are covered with vaults. The building called “Priest House” on the north side of the church was rebuilt in the 1990s based on its ruins. Adjacent to the west wall of the Priesthood are two cellars running parallel to each other. The barrel vaulted cellars are used as exhibition halls today. There are two fountains on the south side of the church and on the west side of the Priesthood.

Gogora Church History

The approximately 250-year-old Orthodox church, dating from the mid-19th century, was built by Greeks living in the region. The building, which was used as a church until 1924, was abandoned after the population exchange and remained empty until 1948. The building, which suffered great damage during the years it remained empty, was partially repaired and used as a prison between 1948 and 1967. In 1967, the building remained empty until 1982. The destruction continued and it faced demolition. The church, which was restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism between 1982 and 1988, was opened as a museum in 1988.

Artifacts exhibited in Giresun Museum: There are ancient artifacts, stone reliefs, weapons, clothing and money samples used in ancient times from the Old Bronze Age, Hittite, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.

A small but very beautiful museum. There is also a cellar at the back. When we went there was no one there, we looked at everything freely. I think it’s a must visit place.
