Aksaray Ulu Mosque, also known as Karamanoğlu Mosque, is a mosque located in the center of Aksaray.

The inscription of the mosque, which is located on a masonry hill, states that it was built by Architect Mehmet Firuz Bey by Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey in 1408-1409.

The mosque, which has access to the interior and the eastern castle walls through the western portal decorated with typical decorations of the Anatolian Seljuk Principalities, and supported by solid buttresses on the other side, has a rectangular plan.

It underwent major repairs in 1482-1483, during the reign of Mehmet Bey’s son, İbrahim Bey. Today’s minaret was built in 1925.

It is a building with a rectangular plan, almost square. The entrance was moved to the west, the entrance was arranged in the form of an iwan, the harim part was in the north-south direction and the front dome of the mihrab was accessed by a Turkish triangle. The north side of the building shows a 2-storey arrangement. The interior has preserved its originality. The tapering arches in the interior have a Gothic effect. The altar is made of plaster material. The dominant material in the building is cut stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

On the facades of the Ulu Mosque made of cut limestone, there are two windows at the top and bottom, inside blind arches. At the corners of the northern façade of the mosque, there are minarets with marble bases and brick bodies. The mosque has three doors on the east, west and north facades.

There are three fountains in the mosque courtyard. It is estimated that the fountain inside the mosque was designed in the early years of the Ottoman Empire, due to the Turks' interest in water. The sixteen-cornered pool is filled with water pouring from a three-bowl fountain in eight branches and distributed to taps.
