Fascinating historic tower with expansive ocean views, cafe and observation deck.

It is an elevator tower that houses two elevators between Mithatpaşa Street and Nihat Bey Street. Due to the 50 meter elevation difference between the streets, the historical elevator, which can be climbed with 155 steps between the districts and to facilitate transportation, was built by the Jewish businessman “Nesim Levi” in 1907.

The elevator tower has 3 floors. The lower floor of the elevator in World War I; Casino – middle floor; Photography room – upper floor; It was used as a cinema. The elevator has been rented to various people over time.

It was sold to Şerif Remzi Reyent in 1942. He is the businessman who introduced figs to the world.  Since a dispute arose between Izmir Municipality and Şerif Remzi Reyent in 1960, the elevator was closed and continued to be used as a warehouse. Şerif Remzi Reyent passed away in 1973 and the elevator was left abandoned to its fate. It was donated to Izmir Municipality by Ayla Ökmen, the niece of Şerif Remzi Reyent.

The elevator, which has been standing tall for 105 years, continues to function today and attracts tourists with its unique view as a cafe, bar and restaurant and offers a unique view of Izmir.

*In addition, this street, where the famous artist Dairo Moreno lived and named after the artist, is under protection.

Today, the elevator is operational and the upper floor serves with a cafeteria and a small viewing balcony. The elevator is accessed from the street whose official name is “Dario Moreno”, popularly known as “Elevator Cul-de-sac”. The tower rises in brick after two sections of stone. There is a wooden balcony supported on iron consoles where the building reaches Şehit Nihatbey Street. From this balcony, the city of Izmir can be viewed from a bird’s eye view.

The elevator, built by Jewish businessman "Nesim Levi (Bayraklıoğlu)" in 1907, was built to provide fast and easy transportation between two districts, which can be reached from one to the other with 155 steps.

Its panoramic view and historical texture are very enjoyable, but as a recommendation, the cafe section at the top can be improved. If a municipality-owned restaurant that can be considered luxurious and works with an appointment system is built, people who earn at least minimum wage (the majority of the country) can celebrate their special days or have the chance to have a special dinner in a place that can be considered equivalent to an Alsancak terrace business. In this case, after people go up and watch the view for 10-15 minutes, the magic ends and they have to descend again. It can become a center of attraction with regular planning.

A location with a beautiful view. When you go upstairs, there is a restaurant section and the prices are quite normal. Usually everyone takes photos and returns.

My first comment is about the elevator building. If you learn about the purpose of the elevator and Dario Moreno before coming to the elevator, the beautiful French music playing in both the elevator and the cabin will make more sense. My second comment is to the cafe. The cafe is a cozy, pet-friendly place. There is space. It is enjoyable to watch the view while eating and drinking something. The employees are helpful and friendly. WC is clean. Note: if you eat more than one scoop of ice cream, 3 scoops make 1 portion and it is more affordable this way. I didn't go to the restaurant. If you go to Izmir, I recommend you to take the elevator. There is also a tram stop very close to it (Karataş).

It is a very nice place

5.0/ 5

It is a very nice place to watch Izmir from a beautiful location. In ancient times, it was built by a charitable Jewish businessman instead of climbing steep slopes. It can be used free of charge. At the top there is a cafe/bar run by Izmir Municipality. QR menu is available in the pictures. Prices are average.
