Considering the Hittite ruins around Kahramanmaraş Castle, it is said that it was built in the late Hittite period, between the 9th century BC and the 8th century, and it is also said that it was built in the Roman Period, between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD, based on the masonry technique of the walls.
Inside the castle, there is an inscription showing that Yavuz Sultan Selim had the castle rebuilt in 1509 and a repair inscription dated 1644 showing that the castle was repaired during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent.
The Liberation Monument was erected in the castle in 1936, in memory of Maraş resisting the French during their occupation of Maraş.
Kahramanmaraş Castle is on top of the masonry hill in the city center of Kahramanmaraş. It is thought that the castle, which has undergone many repairs until today, was built between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. It has a nearly rectangular plan with dimensions of 150×75 meters. The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums repaired part of the walls and three bastions. One of these is the old entrance structure of the castle.
