As one of the main symbols of Kastamonu, the castle stands like the crown of the city from the highest point of the city. The castle, located on a main rock mass in the west of the city, was built by the Komnenos in the 12th century AD. Today, only the inner castle part of the original structure has survived. The outer walls of the castle disappeared at the end of the 18th century. The changes that the castle has undergone over various periods have caused it to reflect Turkish architecture rather than a medieval Byzantine structure. The castle is approximately 120 meters above the city; Being very easy in terms of transportation makes Kastamonu the best place to watch from a panoramic perspective. Inside the castle, there are cisterns, dungeons, escape tunnels and the tomb called “Bayraklı Sultan”.
