Checkout Narmanli Han Watch Video

Narmanlı Han was built in 1831 by the Swiss-Italian architect Guiseppe Fossati as the Russian Embassy. Guiseppe Fossati is the architect who was specially invited to Istanbul by the Palace for the restoration of Hagia Sophia.

It is known that the building was used as the Russian Consulate Building from its construction until 1924 and that its property belonged to the Russian State. Following the collapse of Russian Tsardom, in the early 1930s, these buildings housed offices of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. After these offices were moved in 1933, the group of buildings was purchased by Narmanlı Kardeşler. Many famous artists such as Ahmet Hamdi Tampınar, Aliye Berger, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu lived in the Inn for a while and realized their works here.

Towards the end of the 1970s, the tenants in the old and dilapidated building gradually abandoned it. Most of the building located on the front of Istiklal Street is vacant. The Inn, which remained empty and neglected for a long time and was gradually destroyed and became ruined, dilapidated and abandoned, contrary to its history and magnificence, was purchased by Tekin ESEN and Mehmet ERKUL in 2015. This is the date that will ensure the rebirth of the historical Khan. A devoted restoration work was initiated between 2015 and 2018 on the building, which was owned by Tekin Esen – Mehmet Erkul and their families. This “Living Building”, which emerged after a difficult restoration process, is the recovery of a very important Historical Artifact that was disappearing for Beyoğlu and Istanbul.

Today, Narmanlı Han, which houses restaurants, cafe-bars and entertainment venues appealing to many target groups, is a frequent destination for local and foreign visitors as one of the most important brands of Istiklal Street.

The place where Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Aliye Berger, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu stayed for a while.
It was used as a house or a workshop.
I know how it was before the restoration, so I don't like its current state at all. Because it wasn't true to its original. It was filled with very crowded shops.

For years, I used to look at Aliye Berger's balcony from the outside and wonder what was inside. It became a cafe restaurant and they opened the balcony. When I saw it, I went in and had my coffee on that legendary balcony.
It was the only time I could be happy with its current state.

Although its restoration has been criticized, it is very popular. Yes, the historical texture has been damaged, but it has a seriously beautiful atmosphere. My favorite feature in historical buildings is that they have a courtyard, a place where you can spend time in summer and winter, at least it is one of the areas where hookah is not allowed in Istiklal. The problem here is that there are too many businesses, everything is on top of each other.
