Safranbolu is one of Turkey’s top five finalists in the EDEN 2011 competition themed “Improved Physical Spaces”.
Safranbolu, which was included in the UNESCO “World Heritage List” in 1994 with its success in preserving its historical houses with its rich cultural heritage on a city scale, is a district of Karabük province. 18th and 19th centuries. Safranbolu houses, built with an architectural style that reflects the past, culture, economy, technology and lifestyle of the Turkish society, were also entitled to be among the finalists of the EDEN undiscovered treasures competition with the theme of Improved Physical Spaces in 2011.
The area where the city’s touristic and historical values are concentrated is mostly the “bazaar” section. The castle in the north of the city and the Hıdırlık hill in the south have observation terraces suitable for watching the entire city. City History Museum, Clock Tower, Old Prison Building, Cinci Inn and Bath and Yemeniciler Arasta are among the tourist attractions. Many historical buildings worth seeing in the city are waiting for visitors.
The guild culture, which makes itself felt in the structuring and production activities of the city, continues today in the bazaars of blacksmiths, coppersmiths, tinsmiths and saddlers, where production continues, ensuring the continuation of production with craftsmanship in the city and carrying the local and original character of the city to the present day. Arasta and the shops around it, which has become a handicraft center after its restoration, stand out as areas where visitors to the city can visit and shop for tourist items.
Safranbolu has been preserved as a whole in the form of neighborhoods until today, and therefore, unlike other cities, it is called “Museum City”. Of the approximately 2,000 traditional buildings in the region, 1,007 in the Old city center have been registered and taken under protection.
