SEKA Paper Museum or SEKA Mehmed Ali Kağıtçı Museum is an industrial heritage museum located in the Kocaeli province of Turkey. It is the transformation project of Turkey’s largest industrial heritage into a museum. It was opened to visitors on November 6, 2016.

The construction of the pulp and paper factory started with the foundation laid on August 14, 1934. The factory was built as part of industrialization efforts in the early years of modern Turkey. The first domestic paper was produced on April 18, 1936. It was officially opened and started production on November 6, 1936, under the name Sümerbank İzmit Paper and Cardboard Factory, with an annual capacity of 12,000 tons. Turkey’s first paper engineer, Mehmed Ali Kâğıtçı, played a major role in the establishment of the paper factory. The name of the factory was changed to “Sümerbank Cellulose Industry Enterprise” in 1938. On June 21, 1955, it was named Turkish Pulp and Paper Mills Enterprise (SEKA). In 1997, the factory was added to the privatization list and investment was stopped. In 2005, paper production was stopped and the factory was transferred to Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality.

Exactly 80 years after its establishment, it was converted into a museum again by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality on November 6, 2016.

The museum contains 115 display cases containing 443 carefully selected documents, 337 objects and many photographs. The machinery and equipment used in the paper production process are an important part of the museum.

The museum has 1 entrance hall to the museum, 16 exhibition halls, 1 temporary (temporary) exhibition hall and 1 paper plant courtyard.

Paper museum and science center are intertwined. Entrance is free. You have to spend a long time; one hour is definitely not enough. There are experiments inside the science center that will attract everyone's attention. Everyone, big or small, should go.

A very big museum

5.0/ 5

It’s a very big museum. It is possible to obtain all kinds of information about paper construction and see the factory system of those years. It was very nice to build a museum for the organization, which is one of the first industrial organizations in Turkey.
