First in VIII BC. It is thought that it was built by immigrants who came from Miletus in the 19th century and settled in Sinop and established a colony. VII BC. The castle walls, which were destroyed by the Cimmerian attacks in the 19th century, were built by Pontus ruler IV. It was repaired during the Mithridatic period and the castle was expanded to its current borders. The castle, which was constantly repaired during the Roman and Byzantine periods, was taken over by the Seljuks in 1214 and 1261. An inner castle was created to strengthen the defense of the castle, which was renovated during this period.
Sinop city walls completely surround the narrowest part of the peninsula. The northern walls are 1800 meters long, the southern walls are 400 meters long, the eastern walls are 500 meters long and the western walls are 273 meters long. The thickness of the walls varies between 3-8 meters and the height goes up to 30 meters.
In his Travelogue, Evliya Çelebi mentions the names of the entrance gates to the castle: Kumkapı, Tersanekapı, Yenicekapı, Tannery Gate, Guild Gate and Sea Gate. Today, only Kumkapı and Guild Gate remain standing among these gates.
The northern walls were very worn out by the effects of the sea, and in order to protect these walls from the effects of the waves; A breakwater was built starting from the Kumkapı bastion and extending towards Pazaryeri.
