The city of Van, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, is located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of our country, in the Lake Van basin. The city of Van, which dates back to the Paleolithic period, has been an important settlement center throughout history due to its location on the Silk Road. It was the capital of the Urartian Civilization and continued to maintain its importance during the Seljuk and Ottoman Periods. The idea of establishing a museum was first born in 1932 with the need to preserve in one place the movable cultural assets obtained in different ways from the areas within the borders of Van, which hosted many civilizations. He started to serve as Museum Officer in 1945 and as Museum Director in 1972.
In our New Museum building, a distinguished collection of works from the Van province and its surroundings is exhibited in our exhibition halls prepared with a contemporary museum approach. The sections, where works from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Urartu, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Seljuk, Turkish-Islamic and Ottoman periods are exhibited in chronological order, take our visitors on a unique historical journey. The museum complex, which covers an indoor area of approximately 10,000 m2, includes a cafeteria, conference hall, classrooms, specialized library, children’s playgrounds, souvenir stands and temporary exhibition halls where visitors will have a different experience.

In the museum; Artifacts, coins and ethnographic works that shed light on Van folk culture from the Urartian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Akkoyunlu, Karakoyunlu and Ottoman periods await their visitors.

Bracelets and armbands attract attention with their similar features among Urartian jewelry. Bracelets are generally in the form of ellipses with open ends or with overlapping ends. Armbands have both overlapping and spiral forms.

The majority of Urartian votive plaques were found in Giyimli village, Gürpınar district, Van province. Leaving metal votive plaques in sacred places is a tradition that started with the Urartians in the Near East. On the plates reflecting Urartian folk beliefs, there are human faces depicted from the front as well as religious and magical subjects.

There are many museums to visit in our country, but this one is really beautiful. A very special museum brought to Van. The animations and other works are magnificent. We recommend everyone to see this place.

This is my first time coming to this museum. Really great care was taken. I visited many museums in Turkey, but I found this place very impressive. It's very enjoyable. We see many works together. The fact that all the findings of the Urartian civilization are here adds to its beauty. Even someone who has no knowledge can access healthy information here.

The content of the museum is much better placed compared to many museums, its explanations and presentation are made in detail, it is a place that should be on the list of everyone who will visit Van.
